The iPod Nano mp3 Player(4th generation)
Offered in an attractive range of nine colors for both the 8GB iPod Nano and 16GB models the Ipod Nano 4th generation measures only 3.5 inches x 1.6 inches x 0.25 inch thick at its center and weighs only 42 grams. The iPod Nano feels smooth and pleasant to hold and it looks beautiful . But that isn’t enough on its own so let’s see what else the Nano can do besides delighting the sense
s.
As an owner I have to admit I absolutely love it. I have owned several mp3 players before this, none of them were a patch on it for ease of use and sheer beauty. This is going to be a design classic for sure and that might be reason enough for some to own this little player.
I know there are folk who have taken against iPods in general and they had some influence over me in that my first three mp3 players were not iPods. I wish they had been because they were not nearly as user friendly nor as reliable and neither did they have all of the features that I love in the nano.
iPod Nano Features
All of the features from the older Nano appear again in this 4th gen model, including music, video, and podcast playback, as well as extras such as photos, calendar, games, alarms, stopwatch, contacts, notes, and clocks. A new feature introduced with this nano is the Genius which lets you create an instant 25-song playlist based on the type of song you are currently listening to. This of course requires you to have a decent sized collection of music and genres for it to create you new playlist from. Another fun feature is that you can shake the player to have it change its tune! This can be overridden in case you are running cross country at the time.
The video playback is good for such a small screen and you can tun it horizontally and watch your movies in landscape view- this also works for your photos. I have put home movies on mine and this makes it easy to show them to friends and relatives when visiting. You can buy a connection cable that allows you to watch movies on your TV but I haven’t tried this.
For video podcasts the nano is great. I have subscribed to “Photoshop Magazine” podcast and “Best of YouTube” and both work pretty well though I must admit I prefer to watc the Photoshop tips using iTunes rather than on my little iPod screen.
If you haven’t had an iPod before you will be thrilled by the ability to easily find, download and synchronize podcasts, something that other mp3 players are not capable of. There are thousands of podcasts to choose from and I must admit I use my Nano mainly for listening to podcasts.
You can record your voice on this model but to do so you have to purchase headphones or earbuds that allow microphone input through its headphone jack. If you buy one of these do ask about whether it is compatible as not all headsets are. It is good that this feature has been included as many other brands have had this ability all along. Apple sells compatible headphones with in-line controls and voice recording microphones for $29 at Amazon.com. Apple headphones with mic.
Anyone with impaired vision will be happy to know that the menu selections can be heard as well as read. This feature must be set up via iTunes.
Like all iPods, the fourth-generation Nano supports playback for MP3, AAC (including protected files), Audible, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless. The Nano still doesn’t support WMA music files, but you can always convert your WMA tracks to MP3 within Apple’s iTunes software.
The Apple iPod nano is selling at a discount at Amazon.com for $133 (8GB) and $168.99 (16GB) (This price may change at any time).
